Because we want to be in control of our lives and try to influence anything that will allow us to have that control. Otherwise we just go alone and let others decide what we can or must do and that is not healthy.
You already mentioned the key word here, ';control';. As individuals, our nature is to gain control of the aspects of our lives. As a society, we do the same thing collectively on a larger scale.
