What is a controlled variable?

in an experiment a controlled variable is one that is, well, controlled. for example, say the viscosity of a fluid is a function of temperature and pressure. you want to know the effect of just temperature. you must control the pressure and let temperature change to find the effect of just temperature. if you did not control the pressure you'd find it much more difficult to find out the effect of just temperature. What is a controlled variable?
A controlled variable is variable that can only have one anwser in the equation. For example:

5x+3/1-x=15

So (x) would then be 3
